Variables That Influence Pool Water Color

For some choosing, a pool finish is solely dependent on the water color hue the finish will cast. Trying to tie the pool’s water color into a design element, architecture or theme can be a daunting task. Not only do they want the water color hue to be a visual experience, but some pool owners want to create an emotional experience in their backyard, with the water color hue being the focal point. This video is for you if you are extremely concerned about the water color hue that your pool finish will cast.

There are many variables that will influence the pool’s water color and this is why as the manufacturer of these pool finishes we can only give you an “in most cases” answer to the water color. A pool’s water color is always changing. It is never the same from one moment to the next. The water may cast a slightly different hue just walking from one side of the pool to the other. What we’d like you to understand is that the pool water color is a living form of art and should be appreciated for its own uniqueness.

Dark Color Pool Finishes

The water color hue for a dark color pool finish is highly influenced by its surroundings which make predicting the water color hue difficult. The hue cast can vary from green/blue to blue/black. Dark colored pools are reflective and will mirror the landscape, which can create ambiance for an early evening poolside conversation with friends. One of the disadvantages of dark colored finishes however, is that scale build can be very pronounced on the surface if the water chemistry gets off balance. More attention to the water chemistry is the key to keeping a dark colored pool finish looking good. A good analogy might be to purchase a black car. Dirt and grime show more up more on a black car versus a light colored car but, wow those black cars look incredible. A disadvantage to some and an advantage to others depending on the climate is that the water temperature can be a few degrees warmer that a light colored pool finishes. For those that want to extend their swim season this is the desired outcome.

Is Water Color Important to the Pool Design?

Once the pool finish type decision has been made it is time to choose a color within that product line. The finish color plays an important role in determining the swimming pool water color along with other variables such as pool size, the surroundings including hardscape and foliage and sunlight also are factors that influence water color.
